Dosbarth Oak - Year 5/6

Croeso i Dosbarth Oak. The class teacher is Mrs Piper and she is supported by Mrs Pritchard. We are a mixed year 5 and 6 class.

Class Information

PE takes place every Monday with Miss Davies. Children should come to school dressed in comfortable clothing and trainers. Please be aware that sessions may take place outside in all weathers, therefore please ensure your child always has a waterproof coat with them in school. You will be informed of when children will receive swimming lessons in due course. Children will require a swimming costume, towel and goggles for these sessions.

Reading books and reading journals should be brought to school each day. Reading is something which is encouraged regularly in our class. Please help support this by encouraging your child to read regularly at home.

Children should bring their school water bottle to school each day clearly labelled with their name - it's important to stay hydrated!

Recording work

Children complete work in a variety of different ways in addition to that in their books, they also complete work on their Seesaw accounts and Hwb accounts.

Lots of photos and class information is shown on our Dojo page so please ensure you check regularly to stay up to date.

Children have individual log-ins to Timestables Rockstars, Spelling Shed and Maths Shed. They are encouraged to log on regularly at home to complete tasks. If you require new login details then please contact Mrs Piper directly.

Coffi Cwmbach

We have our own reading coffee shop in our class. Children are able to earn a coffee bean for each time that they read. This can be during the school day or at home. They record each time they read in their reading journal and earn a bean each time. They are then able to exchange their beans for different hot drinks in 'Coffi Cwmbach'. Children love collecting their beans and spending time in our coffee shop. We love reading!

How to help at home

Reading is one of the best things you can do with your child at home. Reading is important in our classroom and we would like it have the same importance at home. Please encourage your child to read for at least 10 minutes every evening. Try and fit it into your daily routines, maybe before they have supper or before they go to bed. It really will help them with their studies.

Children take part in daily Big Maths sessions which focuses on the quick recall of number facts. They complete a CLIC Beat That test every Friday.

They can also access games linked to all areas of Mathematics via the Top Marks website, www.topmarks.co.uk.

Talking with your child about current affairs will help with their understanding of what is going on in the world and how it may affect those around them.

Our topics

Autumn term

This term the over-arching theme for the school is 'One Community, Many Voices'. Dosbarth Oak are exploring the big question 'How can we make our community fairer'. Pupils have had some lovely ideas of what they want to do during this topic.

Some of their ideas include:

  • Going for a walk around the community to see what we can improve.
  • Making the park fairer for everyone.
  • Writing to council to try and help with the current school transport issue.
  • Invite our members of Senedd into school to talk to us.
  • Make links with the Cwmbach Community Association.
  • Helping the elderly in the community.
  • Learning about people who have made a difference in history.
  • Finding out why the Senedd is important to us.

We can't wait to see what difference we can make to our school and wider community.

Our Values

Our value this half term is 'Generosity'. Please discuss this with your child and encourage them to be generous to others. Remember being generous doesn't just mean giving of financial means, we can be generous with our time and actions too!

Immersion Day

We were fortunate enough to visit the Senedd in Cardiff Bay where we took part in a voting activity, held a mini debate, saw the chamber and learnt about the building and its members.
