Children now know the first 19 letter sounds learnt in Phase 2. Children will continue to have regular practise of these. In addition to these they will now begin to learn new graphemes and some tricky words.  

• Set 6: j, v, w, x
• Set 7: y, z, zz, qu
• Consonant digraphs: ch, sh, th, ng
• Vowel digraphs: ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er

During Phase 3, children will also begin to learn the letter names, although they will continue to use the sounds when decoding words.

These words are known as 'tricky words' because they are unable to be decoded with the sounds that the children know. You can help your child at home by practising these words regularly.
